This will, of course, keep ants from slipping into those cracks, but it can also help to keep the ants away from your house altogether.

Of course, anytime ants are coming into your house, they are there in order to look for food that they can take out. If you make sure that you keep all food off the counter and out of rooms where food is not supposed to be, you will certainly cut down on the number of ants in your house.
