With another year of school wrapping up, thousands of high school students are graduating and moving into the next stage of their life - with college and all the things that go with it just around the corner; and of course, of the things that "come with" college, the decision of what to major in during those four years of college will be one of the biggest decisions of all. And while lots of high school students head toward college thinking they might want to study writing, these same students might have been told that a degree in Writing will not help them find a job or make any money after school, which brings up the question, "Will a degree in writing help me?"
One of the misconceptions about writing degrees is that they can only be used by people who hope to become authors - which is, of course, a difficult and precarious path to try to walk along - but there are actually a lot more areas in which a writing degree can be useful than just becoming an author.
Now that the internet is used so prevalently by consumers, businesses must be able to keep up with the best ways to use the internet - and at the center of just about every "best way to use the internet" is writing. Furthermore, because there are so many business students attending most colleges - and because this means large classes with simpler assignments - many business students graduate from college with no particular ability to write well, which makes them a less appealing candidate for many jobs in the current business landscape.
These days, there is a small number of degrees that are consistently valuable (degrees such as Accounting and Engineering), but most other degrees are hit or miss these days, and because of the ever-increasing need for employees in the business world who have an ability to write, a student could certainly do a whole lot worse than leaving college with a degree in Writing!
